About Me

Juliet Hammer, Climbing Coach and Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist

I have been climbing for 16+ years, and it’s taken me everywhere from placing in national-level indoor climbing competitions to the top of V11 boulders. What’s kept me in the sport all these years is the unique mental and physical demands of climbing. Of course, you need to be physically strong to perform in this sport, but you also need to problem solve, lean into your intuition, and trust your decisions!  All while in a decidedly less-than-controlled environment.

My Background

After earning a degree in biology from the University of Virginia and working as a research scientist at the University of Colorado, I was at a crossroads: intellectually, I enjoyed my work, but I yearned for a more active and dynamic career and life. I could stay the course on an academic path that I already knew wasn’t for me, or I could forge my own path and do something that would combine my scientific grounding with my love of fitness and climbing

I took the plunge and became a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, and it turns out that my scientific/academic background is invaluable when it comes to taking a science-based approach to training and understanding the underlying physiology of sports performance.

Coaching Philosophy

As a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist, I help work with clients on strength, technique, and mindset. Coaching can of course help you achieve your measurable goals, but I’m also dedicated to helping my clients with the intangible aspects of their athletic journeys: I want you to feel empowered, and to gain the specific confidence that comes from developing your physical strength, experience, and instincts. The end result is nothing short of transformative

I believe the key to helping my athletes succeed is forming a strong coach-client relationship. I value open communication, mentoring, and ensuring that we are a good fit with one another. The days of the drill sergeant coach yelling “try harder” or “push through it” are gone. Instead, I work with my clients to understand what’s really holding them back, come up with a detailed training program to help them achieve their goals, and keep them accountable and encouraged along the journey.

Stewardship & Scholarship

As a coach, a climber, and a citizen, my mission is to ensure that EVERYONE has access to a safe space to participate in this wonderful sport. The climbing world can feel insular or intimidating, like it’s only “for” one homogenous in-group of people. We must turn the page on that chapter in our sport, and work to build a healthy and supportive culture.

I want to create a safe space for a diverse community of climbers who may have felt unseen or unwelcome in the sport before. We ALL deserve to take up space on the wall, and it’s in that spirit of inclusion and access that I offer my scholarship program - to help train a new generation of climbers who value bringing those skills back to their community, paying them forward, and giving back to the land and communities that we recreate on.
